BQ York is one of the most beautiful dahlias I grow. The blooms are an incredible deep raspberry-plum with silvery, frosted petal tips, and nothing else in my field looks quite like it.
That said, I don’t consider BQ York one of my best-performing cut flower varieties. The plants get extremely tall, like 7’ easily, and can be a challenge to keep corralled. Blooming can also be inconsistent, and it is not especially prolific compared with dependable production varieties like the Cornel series.
I think BQ York would be especially wonderful as a garden dahlia, where its height and dramatic blooms can really shine. I’ll continue growing it for cuts because it is simply too beautiful to give up on, but growers looking primarily for maximum stem production should know that this variety is more about beauty than efficiency. And at the end of the day, there is florist demand for it since it’s just so dang pretty.
Tubers are grown, harvested, divided, and stored on our Massachusetts cut flower farm. Each tuber will have at least one visible eye and will be inspected before shipping.
